Helen
A very dramatic story of thousands of Chinese being killed by the British White Rajah and Dutch in Borneo, this history was never taught to my children in Malaysia. The title is slightly misleading as most of the Chinese landed in the Indonesian side of Borneo before going back and forth into Sarawak which was a British Colony.
A very sad episode of the poor Chinese immigrants in Borneo being killed trying to eke out a living, there is a similar period also when the Chinese were killed and fled from Mexico. These parts of history is now slowly being written, thanks to historians.
Nearer to home and more recent was the burning and sacking of Chinese shops in Solomon Islands, James To happened to be there then and he has some video footage.

The internet produces all sorts of things that we were never taught. It's great that people can now speak out. A classic example is a young Chinese girl, mid 20s, who grew up in China. She is in NZ as a student - and knew nothing of the real China / Chinese history. She has access to the library and this has really opened her eyes. She feels like shouting from the rooftops - letting people in China know. I told her to be wary of the company she keeps.
