Linda / Imurak,
laohuaqiao's post should dispel any doubts you may still have about coming to terms with your Chinese heritage. Take a look at your younger fellow-traveller Alana in the story. Just like you, she is a second generation Chinese-American, her ancestral home is in the same region as yours, Sze Yup. I have visited Sze Yup twice in the last three years. I like to see the ancestral homes and towns of so many of the Chinese overseas. I may go back yet for another visit later on this year.
laohuaqiao,
You can truly be claimed a 老華僑 not just an old new-arrival. Even I, may qualify to such an appellation. Do you think the station would post the documentary online for all to see? Please remind me if it became available. I am very interested. I have seen " In Search of Roots" on youtube, this one promises more.

After attending the San Francisco preview of Searching for Roots in Canton yesterday, I came away very impressed by this well done video! Please view when you have a chance. The DVD should be purchasable within 6 months for those without access to an airing. This emotional documentary brought tears to my eyes. Unfortunately, I am a person with a hardened heart, who prefers to teach people genealogical techniques rather than listen to people's genealogical tales. I was truly touched by their stories. Gee, I missed this post about the film and hope to buy the DVD when it is released. I viewed the YouTube trailer and saw that Alana was just like me (younger), but was lucky to have been raised by her Chinese relatives. I, on the other hand, had no contact with anyone Chinese and grew up only knowing my African American heritage. I never even realized that I looked partly asian until I was in my late 20's and noticed that people kept asking me 'where I was from?, if I was Hawaiian, or Philippino, or Thai'. My answer was that I was Black, and later added that I had some oriental blood (being embarrassed that they must be seeing something that I've never seen before in my mirror).
