Our surname was Koo which is both chinese and korean. My grandfather moved to England in the late 1930's and refused to talk about his background. We assumed it was because he was from a poor background. However, he did occasionally talk about the nationalists in china. We've spoken to relatives of his and they claimed they weren't chinese but refused to comment further. Physically we perhaps look a little bit ambiguous, many chinese people think we're not and in fact one time a chinese man who was bilingual in mandarin and korean greeted us in korean. We are also mistaken for japanese. We also mixed with indian ; our mother was half northern chinese and half indian which may explain some non east asian physical features We were also born with a blue spot which is apparently dominant in north asians
