Hi Danny,
Welcome to the Forum.
If the gravestone of your mother's grandfather has Chinese characters - please take a digital photo and post it on the Forum. This may have his full Chinese name and the names of the village, county, and province where he was born.
Try to find any old letters, photos, and immigration documents that may have the name of relatives, village names, and addresses. This would be helpful too.
Regards,
Henry

Hi Elena,
Welcome to our Forum.
Please post the photo of your father's Chinese name signature and his marriage contract and one of our Chinese literate members can translate for you.
If your father's gravestone has any Chinese characters inscribed on it - please post a photo of it also.

I am exploring which libraries hold jiapu and zupu, and if your Zhongshan Lims happen to be from Niwan xiang / Naiwan heung 泥灣鄉, you could be in luck. Columbia University library has genealogy book for Lin/Lim/Lam/Lums from this place specifically. More details are available at their catalog page: clio.cul.columbia.edu:7018/vwebv/holdingsInfo?bibId=3653303

As far as I know, my village On Tong and the principle Village Hall is ancestral hall central for all Lin/Lim/Lam and Lums of Zhongshan. There is a comprehensive genealogy book. I added my details a few years ago, and have a copy of the jupu.

Does anyone know where 泥灣鄉 is?

Hi yauchin:
I'm glad you are still searching. Don't give up! However, your task is very challenging without more information about your grandfather. What was formerly known as Chungshan/Zhongshan County covered a large area with many different villages.
I noticed in a previous post in this thread that Douglas Lam mentioned that he has a genealogy for On Tong Village 安堂村, a place that produced many overseas Chinese families, including the family of my grandmother's sister and families in Peru. Perhaps your grandfather is listed there or in some other Lam genealogy.
You also asked about your family name. I am assuming you are asking about "Yauchin." The registration certificate from Lima does not contain the Chinese characters for this name. Instead, your grandfather is identified by a different name, Lam Yoong Jiu 林榕照. "Yauchin" is interesting because the two words "yau chin 有錢" mean "rich" in Cantonese. But it is impossible to tell if this was actually another name that your grandfather had or if it was a nickname or if these were even the correct characters for the name. "Yau chin" could mean something completely different but without the characters, there is no telling what it means. If Yau Chin was really another name for your grandfather, Yoong Jiu would then be another name that he had, perhaps the name he took after marriage.
Sorry I cannot be of more help.
Greg
