Hi - does anyone know if there is a chinese website similar to gedmatch.com that allows for uploading autosomal DNA analysis results from 23andme and FTDNA ? I did find a chinese 23andme knockoff - mygene23.com/ but they seem more focused on health-related matters than on ancestry and they do their own analysis. Thanks for any input!

I don't think there is a genealogical centric website for Chinese yet.
I don't believe the Chinese are at that tipping point yet. Iin the USA the least expensive is ~$300+. With lots of assumptions, if you carry that price point to RMB and the average income of the Chinese citizen, you might find DNA analysis cost prohibitive. The key is your sample database size, and economics play a major role. I am not even convinced that there is enough of a sample size in the Western world.
Until the price point comes into the rage of easily disposable income of the Chinese, there will not be enough DNA samples to make a comparison. Maybe in the next 1-2 decades.
Can you read the mygene23.com and determine the cost to do DNA analysis? Are you trying to research a specific lineage?

Whole genome testing on mygene23 is 50,000 Yuan ($8,000 USD) - yes, that's prohibitively expensive. 23andme testing is now only $100 USD, which is in the budget for many chinese. The problem is that 23andme prohibits testing from mainland chinese consumers. There are some mainlanders who have been able to squeak through however. And there are organizations like DNAConnect.org that are trying to bring back samples from Chinese birth parents for analysis.
There are a significant number of chinese adoptees in the 23andme and gedmatch databases who are trying to research their ancestry and possibly make connections with biological relatives. Most are only finding 3rd to distant cousin matches with a common ancestor proximity of seven generations.
China does have a vast DNA databank comprised of parents whose children have gone missing and children recovered from traffickers, the problem is you have to go through the chinese police in order to access it.
Thank you for your reply!
By the way, is there a private section of the board where only registered users have access (ie. the posts won't be indexed by search engines and are not visible to the general public) ?

You have done your research. Thanks for sharing. I always learn from others. ....By the way, is there a private section of the board where only registered users have access (ie. the posts won't be indexed by search engines and are not visible to the general public) ? No. You can private email via the forum to keep from prying eyes. Most active user have their internet email addresses listed also.

The current price of U$100 is much less than when I purchased the service years ago. However, I don't think you have access of the genome in order to upload it to another service. Probably vendor lock-in. Let me know otherwise.

China (as well as Russia and India) has export restrictions on DNA - specifically regarding the health analysis provided by 23andme. I'm sure 23and me would love to have access to the Chinese market. There are other DNA testing companies like Canada-based Genetrack that offer certain DNA tests to Chinese - You can export the genome data from 23andme and upload it to gedmatch.com for more complete admixture analysis (currently uploads are not allowed, but that feature should be back soon.) At 23andme, go to Home > Browse Raw Data > Download - www.23andme.com/you/download/The genetrack URL is not coming through - www. genetrackchina. com/ en-us/ (close up the spaces)

Forgot to mention that you can also upload the 23andme export here for better Haplogroup analysis: dna.jameslick.com/mthap/

kantmakm, Thank you so very much for your participation, insight, and analysis. I feel that genome analysis will have a distinct future in family heritage research. When chromosomal analysis was more expensive, and with most of the current databases being inaccessible, it was hard to see value in the technique. Now with your clarifications, I realize that archiving the genomes of as many elders as possible is imperative. Just as I hear current family historians lament not interviewing their deceased elders, I have decided to not repeat these similar lapses (however, getting post mortem DNA is a little too creepy for me). As I have written in the past, a lot of my genealogical documentation and research is meant for my future family heritage researching descendants. Your description of downloading the genome from www.23andme.com was invaluable and helped to determine a new work flow in my genealogy ToDo list.

New Chinese DNA analysis service - www.wegene.com currently offering health/heritage but will be offering "Family Finder" features once their database gets enough critical mass.

¥9999 is a lot of money for an unknown service record.

No Joke! But the standard kit is 1699 RMB ~ still steeper than 23&me, but not totally unreasonable.

Hi all, I am Gang CHEN, co-founder of WeGene.com. We will release a new standard kit tomorrow. We will have a new website and a new price, which is much lower than 1699 RMB.
The standard kit is based customized microarray from Affymetrix and Illumina. About 600K SNPs will be tested for each sample. Ancestry, health, sports, dieting, drug response and genetic disorders analysis will be provide.
All customers can download the raw data from our website when their results are ready.
Pls check WeGene.com tomorrow if you have interests.
Pls send email to cg@wegene.com or service@wegene.com if any question.
BTW, WeGene support 23andme data. You can authorize us to get your genotype data from 23andme through API, then you can get our analysis report. This service is free.

Note that GedMatch has an upload capability from WeGene in beta.
I personally encourage all DNA ancestry testers to upload their raw data to GedMatch regardless of testing company. Their analysis tools are easy to figure out and are quite extensive (yet largely free). And of course it allows ancestry searching regardless of where each person chooses to have their testing done.
Please also note that DNA testing has very little value unless users connect their DNA to whatever genealogical tree they have available!
