Hi, I am looking for information about my grandfather Chong On, no matter how big or small... all would be appreciated. The information i already have is i think he came from Tai Pung (i think thats how you spell it), i got this information from my uncle who said he remembers my grandfather mentioning this. Although, on his alien card it says he was from Hong Kong. I would like to know information about Tai Pung as i have tried but with no success. He came to England, Liverpool in approx 1912, where he was the only chinese tailor. From some information i have read about the surname Chong i believe this is Hakka, does anyone know if this is correct? Also, does anybody know the meaning of the surname Chong? I would be grateful if anybody with any information regarding any of the above would contact me either thhrough here or my email address natalietats@hotmail.co.uk

If you had revisited the Ziplink site where you first posted this question you would have seen my reply which read:
"If I am not mistaken your gf was a Hakka and your surname Chong is Zheng in Mandarin. Your Tai Pung is most likely Dapu which is in northeastern Guangdong Province near the Fujian Province border."
Your "Tai Pung" should be Tai Pu 大埔 in Cantonese/Hakka.
Hakka Chong is Zheng in Mandarin and Jehng in Cantonese, 鄭. Other than being a surname it also means "formal".

Tai Pung could also be Da Peng ??, a town in Shenzhen near Hong Kong border. Da Peng has a large, if not exclusively, Hakka population; whenever someone mentions he/she's from Da Peng, Hakka immediately comes to mind. See this site, www.buji.cn/ , scroll down to Longgang district of Shenzhen to find Da Peng on the map as one of Longgang's 10 towns.
