My daughters grandfather immigrated from Cuba.. We have his father & mothers names But we don't know what his grandfathers name was because his father had abandoned him as a young boy. What we know is that her Great, great grandfather was brought to Cuba from China & was given a french name of Couret. We know that he married a Spaniard & had a child. His son was in the Military in Cuba & that's all we have. Does anyone have any recomendations on where to find any more information, your help would be appreciated as my daughter age 13 is trying desperately to find her Chinese heritage.

Sandy, There are Cuban genealogy forums & specialty groups. I recommend you check with your local genealogical society and the LDS church for references. Once you get to the level of her gg-grandfather, then her goal would be to gather as many Chinese characters from immigration papers and ship manifests. The Cuban genealogists will comment on the availability of these documents. From my Chinese genealogy network, there is an organization called Casino Chung Wah, which is the umbrella organization for Chinese Cubans and their family associations. Another source is this website The Chinese Presence in Havana link. My contact got a recent email from Mr. Jorge Chao, the president of the Casino Chung Wah in Havana. He says his records may be a little spotty going back to the 1950s. Also, there is Dr. Evelyn Hu-DeHart of Brown University who is an academic expert on Chinese Diasporas. Currently, Dr. Hu-DeHart is in Havana until May 2015 involved in research. Here is her biography link

As a follow up, I missed this note in my private email: I would recommend you try sending the email in both Traditional Chinese and Spanish using Google Translate. I find the Google Translate for Chinese to be wanting but works better with western languages.
