Hello everyone, I have just found this group & joined, hoping someone can help me with this family. Biggest problem is, I don't think Law is their original name. This is what I know:
1891 census of England RG12/835 Vol 11 Fol 124 pp Lucton School, Henfield, Sussex. Boarding at the school.
Herbert Law, born 1879 Canton, China Bertha Law, born1881 Canton, China Jessie Law, born1884 Canton, China Ernest Law, born 1885 Canton, China
1901 census Lewisham, London
Bertha Law, Ward, age 20, born Canton, China Jessie Law, Ward, age 17, born Canton, China Ernest Law, Ward, age 16, born Canton, China
Herbert is in Scotland.
I have never been able to trace any of these births. In an email from a family member he recalls his grandfather Herbert telling him "some words that were all vowels, and that this was him". Borneo was mentioned, and Indonesia was mentioned by another family member.
Was there something in the history of this country around these times that would have made people send their children overseas to be educated / live. I have no clues to their parents. Hope someone can give me some pointers.

They were pretty young in the first census mentioned. Surely there must have been parents with them. And having English names is another quandary. Law could also be be Lau or Lowe. Where did you locate the census information?

Thank you for reply.

U.K. England 1891. They were boarding at a school. No parents with them, and I can find no trace of parents anywhere. I don't think LAW is the original surname.
