Vintage Map to share - Can someone identify location?

This map was in the papers of Leo Gim Soon (George Soon Leo) and Chin Yuntie (Yuntie Chin Leo).
George went back to China in 1924 and married and brought Yuntie back to America.

They were from Fo Tao Young Village, Chun Low, Toi Shan, Kwongtung, China and Dai Won Village, Look Chun, Toi Shan, China respectively. I was told the gps locations for the 2 villages are Fo Tao Young Village is located at 22.087632, 112.780587.
and Dai Won is located at 22.078423, 112.81213 in Doushanzhen, by the forum moderator.

Can somebody tell me if both of these villages are on this map? And maybe where on the map they are located.

If you can tell me the area of the overall map and what the map description is (does it have a date on it?) I would be able to repost it for others from this area.

What you have is a very impressive, very detailed map of the Toishan County. If you can tell me what 镇 or township (baisha, samba, taicheng, etc) I can try and locate the villages. Otherwise it's too hard for me to go browsing through the entire map.

Please see the locations of Fo Tao Young 甫草洋 and Tai Won 大灣 on the zoomed-in map I've posted below. This patch is located north of the bay in the middle of the map you shared.




Notice that Fo Tao Young is unlabeled because the scale of the map is too small to show all the villages found in this region.


However, Stanford has a collection of 1:50,000 military maps of Kwangtung from 1944 and the specific map that shows these two villages can be found (and downloaded in high-res) at the following link: purl.stanford.edu/bq722jw6331. Please see below for my annotations:

I have included below the Chinese Charactors for the village of Pinglei as a starting point.

Just so you know how the villages I am asking about relate. . .


The above two villages are the villages of Leo Gim Soon and his wife Chin Yuntie, who came to America and whose daughter married Wong Sheld Fong in Portland Oregon.


These other villages I am hoping you can help locate on this map are the ancestral homes of Wong Sheld Fong's parents and ancestors also from Sun Ning District (Now Toi Shan?)

YOU translated the headstone of Wong Sheld Fong's father, Wong Hung Yin and located for me on Google Maps the following . . . Interesting that you have his fathers given name as Yuk instead of Hung . . oh well

The middle line of writing on the headstone reads: 黃玉寅翁之墓, where 黃玉寅 = "Wong Yuk Yin", 翁之墓 = "Father's grave"

The right line reads: 廣東台山白沙, where 廣東 = "Guangdong", 台山 = "Tai San", 白沙 = "Bak Saw"

The left line reads: 西村堡平陽里, where 西村堡 = "Sai Choun Walled Village", 平陽里 = "Ping Yung Lei"


lachinatown has provided the Mandarin Pinyin romanticization of the address, which is helpful for seeking the village location in Google Maps. Click here to the see the satellite image for “Ping Yung Lei"/Pingyangli. The village is marked by the red pin while "Sai Choun Walled Village"/Xicun is located several villages to the north and "Bak Saw"/Baishazhen is the larger cluster to the southeast.

I am hoping to have you help figure out why his headstone said the village name was Pingyangli . . (and his grandchildren were made to memorize then entire line you have above . . "Guangdong","Tai San","Bak Saw" "Sai Choun , "Ping Yung Lei" as the location that Wong Hung Yin's son, was born when all of the paperwork, CEA Interviews and other documents say the following:

Wong Sheld Fong was suppose to have been born in Ping Young Lei. According to him.

Wong Hung Yin and Mah She Wong both said that they built a house and moved to Nom Lung Village (the village) or Nom Hing or Hung Lee (the section of Nom Lung Village) where Wong Sheld Fong was born about a year after they married at his fathers house in Deung Hong Village and that Wong Hung Yin (Wong Sheld Fong's father) was suppose to have been born in Deung Hong Village, as well as his father before him.

Mah She said that Deung Village was about 3 lis to the SW of Nom Lung Village.
CONTRODICTION
Wong Hung Yin said that Deung Village was about 4-5 lis to the SW of Nom Lung Village.

What measurment is a "lis"

Are there any villages to the South West of Ping Young Lei that sound like Deung Village or Ding Hong Village? Might that name have been changed also?


Using the info from the headstone and your location of that village, can you find it on the above map?

Is Deung Village to the SW?
