Does anyone know if there are records of Chinese shipping to Australia in the gold rush days, late 1800's early 1900's. My Grandfather came from Canton to Australia. I am hoping to find names of those who departed China. Thanks. The only other information I have is from his my Grandfather's wedding certificate where his name is recorded as Louey Go from Sin Way China. His parents recorded as Hong Ho and Loius She. (spelling copied from certificate). We grew up being told he came from Toishan, Canton. The name was changed when he came to Australia. Any help would be so much appreciated.

Hi, click on the link below a listen to the National Archives of Australia's podcast on "Chinese migration" to Australia. They may or not talk about lists and or where to search for names. If not, start clicking and to check on the holdings at their immigration case files within their National Archives. I'm in the U.S. and not familiar with their collections. www.naa.gov.au/collection/publications/papers-and-podcasts/immigration/index.aspx (I googled National Archives of Australia chinese immigration listings pre 1900) good luck, Jeanie Low

Hi Jeanie,
Thanks for your response. I have searched the National Archives to no avail. My only hope now is that DNA testin will become more popular in China and maybe we will find information from there. Our family name was changed from Go - if that is correct - to Chew. Makes it difficult to find records.
thanks again, Janine

Are you trying to trace your family within Australia or are you trying to find your roots in China? What information do you already have. You shared the phonetic spelling of your grandparents but their Chinese surnames are hard to determine from the period's phonetic spelling. Your grandmother's second English name came from 氏 which indicates that her surname has the Australian phonetic spelling Loius. I am sure you knew this already.
Give us more information, especially any Chinese characters or tombstones photo you might have. What has your family interviews revealed?

adbears123, If you're in Sydney, the State Archives is in Penrith. There is also The Mitchell Library within the State Library.
