I recently found my grandmothers Dutch passport for passage from Indonesia (former Dutch-East Indies) to the Netherlands. Stating that my great-grandfathers name was: Wang (Huang), Lok Mie. Who passed away in Canton, China. This must have been between 1913 (my grandmothers birthyear) and 1950 (the time the passport was made). Her mothers name was Tjong, Se Niong. Both date of births says: unknown. Their residency was Canton, Guangzhou. I searched all over the internet but can not find anything.

Hi rowan:
The Forum members would be happy to help you in your research but I'm afraid you need to provide more information, specifically, names in Chinese characters and the name of your grandmother's village, also in Chinese. "Canton" is the general term that Chinese immigrants of Cantonese origin used to describe their place of birth; it could refer to anywhere in Guangdong (known in olden days as Canton) Province or, less likely, to the provincial capital of Guangzhou (also called Canton).
Keep searching and don't give up!

Hi Greg,
Thank you! I have been stuck for years unfortunately. I only have the characters of my grandmother, but not my great-grandmother/father. Hopefully I find something in this lifetime!

rowan, Since your grandmother emigrated to the Netherlands, there are probably some official immigration records that may contain his personal information such as the name of the place where he was born, etc. Some of the records may include Chinese characters that he may have written. The Mormon Church is the largest organization that provides genealogical information & help for free. They have over 5,700 locations internationally, I believe there are 5 locations in the Netherlands, just put your cursor over the location & the contact information will appear: www.familysearch.org/centers/locations/The Family Search Library has the most extensive collection of Chinese genealogies that can be searched electronically. Here are some links about research websites: www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/The_Netherlands_Genealogywww.familysearch.org/en/wiki/The_Netherlands_Online_Genealogy_Recordswww.familysearch.org/en/wiki/Netherlands_WebsitesMy China Roots is the premier Chinese genealogy research company: www.mychinaroots.com/The owner is Huihan Lie, he is Chinese and he grew up in the Netherlands - he may be able to provide you with assistance> Huihan's direct email is: huihanlie@mychinaroots.com Henry
