Hello!
I’m pretty new to this wondrous forum. I’ve collected as much oral history that I have from living relatives to know that the first relatives coming from China on my mom’s side were from Taishan. They speak the Xinning dialect. However, no one really knows where the ancestral village is (it’s been 4 generations now)
Mom’s side is 李。 First to settle in Malaysia from China is Lee Hong Lam (李鳳林?) He married Ng Sooi (she may be his wife he met in Malaysia). He brought his family over to Malaysia (mother, brother + brother’s fam and sister. His dad may have already passed on before then).
His dad’s name is Lee Ah Hiong and mom’s name Yuen Ah Yeow. Not super sure if that’s their “real” name if you get what I mean.
Maternal grandmother’s side first person to come to Malaysia was Looi Fook Lean whose dad’s name is Looi Fook Meng.
I believe all from the Taishan area.
Any help is much appreciated! Thank you!!

Hello eoh14! Welcome to the Forum. I’m glad you collected as much oral history that you have from living relatives. I totally understand no one really knowing where the ancestral village is, since it's been 4 generations now. Clicking the link that Henry provided (Thanks, Henry!), I looked more closely at the 9 matches for 鳳林 and saw that only the ones on Pages 8106 and 8113 are complete personal names, 凤林 / Feng4 lin2, 凤 being the Simplified Character for the Traditional Character 鳳. The rest of the matches are either parts of village names like 凤林村, or parsing errors in which the software couldn't distinguish names ending with the character 鳳 and names beginning with 林, as separate names. The 凤林 on Pages 8106 and 8113 are actually one and the same person. These two pages are part of a family tree. Several generations of his male ancestors are shown on Page 8106; his single recorded male descendant, on Page 8113. Earlier generations of male and just two female ancestors are shown on Pages 8012, 7999, and 7997. Some of the more immediate information on these page are: - The name of this 凤林's lineage, 宣仪 / Xuan1 yi2 : 茂材 / Mao4 cai2 : 文雅 / Wen2 ya3 : 可贵 / Ke3 gui4 : 员方 / Yuan2 fang1 : 发伟房 / Fa1 wei3 branch of the Li extended family - The name of his father, 连俊 / Lian2 jun4 - The name of his son, 辛元 / Xin1 yuan2 The name 连俊 / Lian2 jun4 be the marriage name of your ancestor Lee Ah Hiong. Do you know the name of your ancestor Lee Hong Lam's son? Unfortunately, Pages 8106 and 8113 don't give any additional information that may help identify this 凤林 as your Lee ancestor Lee Hong Lam, information such as the names of this 凤林's mother and stepmothers, brothers, or wives. If this 凤林 is your Lee ancestor though, then the table of contents on Page 7828 provides the name of your Lee ancestral village: Category of Branch of the Extended Family | 宣仪 / Xuan1 yi2 茂材 / Mao4 cai2 branch of the extended family | Place of Residence | 北陡中城 / Bei3 dou3 Zhong1 cheng2 | Page numbers | Pages 168-286 |
If the grave monuments of your Lee ancestors - as well as your Looi and Yuen ancestors - have Chinese inscriptions, these inscriptions may give the names of your ancestral villages. Do you have, or can you get, good photographs of these grave markers? Cheers! LJ
