This is a complete long shot and I'm a complete newbie to this so please forgive my ignorance. All I know about my grandfather, Jim Lee Low, was that he was born in Sunning (now Taishan) in 1853. He moved to the UK with his brother and they settled in Liverpool. Once in the UK I've got a pretty good picture of his life but I know nothing of his early life but would live to find out. I know he returned home a to Sunning a few times so I'm guessing he still had family. Any thoughts, ideas or suggestions are most welcome. Thanks Dazz

Hi Dazz, and welcome.
If you are still in the UK, I am not sure what resources are available to you that would be helpful in your research, but I would encourage you to look especially for immigration records.
Most important would be two things: your grandfather's name in Chinese characters and the name of his village in Chinese characters. See if anyone in your family has any documents (for example, old letters) or any other information that would help you to get this information. Do you know where your grandfather's grave is located? Are there any Chinese characters on the headstone? It is traditional for headstones of Chinese people to be inscribed with their names and the names of their villages.
Do you know if your grandfather's surname was Lee, Low, or something else? For a number of reasons, names of the early Chinese immigrants can be very confusing.
Good luck in your research and please contact us again if you get any clues.
