Hello,
Wondering if anyone can help locate a village which name has been passed down as "Shek Hon".
Not related to me but to a DNA match. I try to map all of mum's SiYi matches so it can give me some clues as to her ancestral villages as her grandfather and great grandfather didn't leave behind any written information etc.
This dna match asked the maternal uncle of her husband (who is Seto) about where they came from: "He said they were all from the same village which bordered Taishan. The name of the village is or was Shek Hon located in Hoiping. That is all in Taishanese"
Trouble is I don't know the clan really as it was a maternal uncle. But he said "they all came from..." so it could be a Seto village also.
Village database and map resources have not yielded anything.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Sally,
Happy Lunar New Year!
The name of the village "Shek Hon" sounds similar to name of the 鎮 / market town of 赤坎 / Chik Hom / Chìkǎn, which is in 開平 / Hoiping / Kāipíng. According to the Village Database, this town is the market for the following 鄉 / heungs / home towns that contain Seto villages:
上股鄉 / Sheung Ku Heung / Shànggǔxiāng (https://villagedb.friendsofroots.org/display.cgi/heung/189)
下股鄉 / Ha Ku Heung / Xiàgǔxiāng (https://villagedb.friendsofroots.org/display.cgi/heung/191)
護龍鄉,烏龍鄉,烏涌鄉 / Wu Lung Heung, Wu Lung Heung, Wu Chung Heung / Hùlóngxiāng, Wūlóngxiāng, Wūchōngxiāng (https://villagedb.friendsofroots.org/display.cgi/heung/226)
Using Stephen Li's Taishanese Language Home 台山话资源网 dictionary (https://www.taishandict.com/), I reconstructed how Chikan might be pronounced in Taishanese:
赤 / [tsiak33] (https://www.taishandict.com/Misc19/Audio/misc19_10.mp3, the first of the two syllables there) 坎 / [ham22] (https://www.taishandict.com/Differ03/Audio/differ03%20Part%20039%20of%20155.mp3)
Can you ask the DNA match to ask her husband's maternal uncle if the Shek Hon is pronounced as in the two mp3 sound files (minus the second syllable in the first mp3)?
Incidentally, this Forum has a thread devoted to "Soo Hoo, Seto, Szeto, Situ from Hoiping (Kaiping)" (https://siyigenealogy.proboards.com/thread/167/seto-szeto-situ-hoiping-kaiping). The participants in that thread may be able to provide more assistance.
Additionally, the Seto line of my family came from Chikan.
I hope this all helps.

Hi there, LJ.
Yes - I sure can ask. I've been contacting the DNA match's mother via email, so I'll send an email now. I've also sent you a PM re DNA tests.
Thanks for the input - this is extremely helpful. Trying to identify villages based on the way these characters are said is a tricky task that I have not yet mastered and I appreciate your guidance!
