visit to ancestral hometowns

my ancestors come from the MAK village in Shunde. Trying to organise a tour there. any one interested in joining.

My son's ancestors come from Kaiping. Don't know which village, but his family's surname is LO (LAW in cantonese). Any one interested in signing for a tour to Kaiping if we organised one. We used to live in HK for several years, but now we are back in Malaysia. We are thinking of going back to visit China next year and a visit to Kaiping would be nice.

I'm actually heading over to HK and hopefully to Hoi Ping at Xmas this year. Hoi Ping, or more specifically Shui Kou, is my dad's village.

I'm struggling to find directions on how to get to Hoi Ping from HK. Friends have suggested catching a train to GuangZhou and then a bus to Hoi Ping. But someone mentioned that catching a ferry might provide a more direct route. Have you worked out how you will be reaching Hoi Ping?

Also, could anyone recommend a hotel in Hoi Ping?

The hassle-free way to get from Hong Kong to Kaiping (Sanbu) is by ferry from the China-HK Ferry Terminal located on the west side of downtown Kowloon. Here is the site: www.cksp.com.hk/eng/route/main.html for more information.

Sorry, do not know of any hotel names, but I am sure there are plenty of hotels in Sanbu. Shui Kou is located in the NE corner of Kaiping county.

At the HK Ferry terminal, get ferry ticket to Zhongshan
(about 1-1/2 hours ride from Hong Kong).
From Zhongshan, just ask around whether any transport to Hoi Ping.
The shortest route is:
Zhongshan-Jiangmen-Enping-Hoiping.
If you can't get direct transport to Hoi Ping from Zhongshan, then break up journey, Zhongshan-Jiangmen which is usually available; then Jiangmen-Hoiping.
Last time, I went I organised a tour guide and bus to meet us, so we touched base with all the towns, without visiting any ancestral village in particular, except the one in Shunde.

Cynthia, the one stop direct route from Hong Kong to Kaiping is by ferry, a journey of about 3 hours. There is no necessity to break up the journey by going through Zhongshan, then to Jiangmen, Enping and Kaiping. These places are not enroute to Kaiping; in fact, Jiangmen and Enping are in opposite directions. Kaiping City is also referred to as Sanbu.

Hi there

If you are going to Shui Kou of Kai Ping from Hong Kong, I believe it will be easier for you to take either 1) the cross border bus operated by Wing On Travel in HK (single trip ticket costs around HKD200) or 2) long journey bus at Lu Wu Bus Station (in China, costs only around RMB60 for single trip). Both of them stop over at Shui Kou Station.

I actually tried out both ways and I prefer the latter one. Travelling times for both are very much the same, as both take around 4 hours (including the travelling time you spend in Hong Kong). It's lot cheaper and more convenient if you take the long journey bus at Lu Wu Bus Station. Those buses are departing Lu Wu Bus Station at nearly 30 minutes interval. It takes about 3 1/2 hours from Lu Wu to Shui Kou. Tickets can be easily bought at the Bus Station.
