For those of you with an archaeology interest in early Chinese Americana, here is a weblink to a report on the findings of a Chinatown, the first of several in San Jose, California: www.stanford.edu/~cengel/SJCT/archives/Progress_Rep_02-03.pdf#search=%22sam%20yup%22 The report is entitled the "Market Street Chinatown Archaeological Project". The Chinatown on Market Street was the heart of the overseas Chinese community in greater southern San Francisco Bay area from its founding in 1860 until its destruction by arson fire in 1887. Because of urban renovation, the archaeological site was investigated in 1980, and this 2003 report catalogue, analyzes, and curates a remarkable collection of artifacts and archaeological samples that were excavated from downtown San Jose 1985 and 1986. Check it out.
