Here is a site (http://www.kaiping.com/kpmap/) containing township maps of Kaiping. Some of the maps can be enlarged by clicking on the bottom line of text below the map. The maps are all in Chinese. Here is the site for Taishan townships www.taishan.com/english/towns/index.htm. This one uses Pinyin but the maps are in Chinese.

Yes, the site is not accessible anymore and it does not even identify how one can register to use it. Just have to wait and see what happens.

Jimmy@taishan.com replied to an inquiry I made about the www.taishan.com website: "Allen, No, I am in the process of moving information over to a new server in the United States. Last month, I had terrible problems with my server in China and I am working on restoring whatever backups I have. Sorry for any inconvenience! - Jimmy ....."

Taishan.com site is back on line! Hmm, www.taishan.com seems to be down again (was last nite and again when I tried today). Anyone know if they're changing ISP's or something? Cheers! Southsloper.

I'm sure a bunch of you has already tried this ... trying to locate your ancestral village and viewing it on Google Earth.
Only catch is that you have to know where to look first. On the Kaiping website that I visited, there is a map of the area, and on it, you can locate your village name (in Chinese). I found our village name and using the geographical features described on the map, I located our old village on google earth...quality is still quite crappy, but it's better than nothing.
For my spouse's family, we got hold of a "tourist" type map (ie. minimal info) and showed the map to a living relative and asked him to locate the area where he remembers where the old village was. Again, once we had done that, we zeroed in using google earth to check it out.
Only draw back for a guy like me is that I have to use a PC to do this viewing, as there is not currently a MAC google earth version.
Good Luck! and Happy New Year of the Dog! arf arf

We found our village Hargei, and it is a small island. My mother-in-law, aged 90, was most impressed. She was able to point out other surounding villages, but only from her perspective - ie she used to walk or row between villages in the early 1900s-1950s, so knew the general directions. So looking down on the area was a delight.

Howdy folks- I've updated my personal website with some cool google earth satellite images of my village Wing On Le in Bak Hup, Hoy ping, Kwangtung province (Mandarin: Yong'an Le in Beihe, Kaiping, Guangdong). I've also uncovered the fact that the cluster of villages where my ancestral village sits is collectively known as "Ma Gong Lung" (Mandarin: Magionglong). I don't know how to write it in Chinese, but I will prepare a jpeg of the chinese characters onto my website. If anyone can figure out what it means, I'd be eternally grateful. thanks. Here's my weblink: www.generasian.ca/roots2.html

Hi Vancouver Wong,
Great website ! Your ancestral village looks very prosperous !!! Cool satellite imagery! On your next trip back - bring a GPS unit with you and capture the geographic coordinates of the village etc.
