I'm taking my family to China for a vacation this summer and I would like to visit the village where my great grandfather was born. From the "Taishan Genealogy" site, I was able to get this information:
Heung: Tai Nam To Heung Sub Hueng: To Yeung Heug Village: Sing Tong
A map would be appreciated and any tips on the best way to get to the village from either Hong Kong or Guangzhou.
Thanks,
Doug Yip

Look at the maps on the other threads. Do you read Chinese? Others will be here soon to help you. Hope your trip goes well.

The closest town is called Duhu. You can see the location at this site: taishan.com/english/towns/index.htm From there you should be able to enquire about your ancestral village. You can reach Duhu by ferry from Hong Kong to Guanghai and then north by bus.

No, I can't read Chinese, so it makes looking at Chinese maps difficult.
Knowing the village is in Duhu certainly narrows the search. Wouldn't it be faster to drive from Guangzhou, rather than take a ferry/bus from Hong Kong? We'll be in both cities, so either option works. What about renting a car & driver (or even taxi for a day) from Guanzhou?

I just got some new information from an article I found on a Canadian government site. The village is "Shengtang" in Duhu County.

Shengtang is Mandarin for Sing Tong. Yes, you can also go by car from Guangzhou to Duhu. Suggest you overnight there and visit the village, otherwise it will be too much of a rush with very little time to spend at the village.

Thanks. I guess I'm going in little circles! You're probably right about staying overnight. However, that will mean we'll have to make the journey via bus. I guess it will just make it more of an adventure!

Sing Tong is just on the northern outskirt of Duhu. I've heard people said it is at the end of the street which may be true. My impression of Dufu, I was a young lad then, was street with shops and stalls. Duhu has a hotel that you can spend a night in. The bus ride from Guangzhou is only a couple of hours, not too bad.
You said great grandfather. This means you are from the generation as Graham whom I know. Which branch do you belong to?

My grandfther is "Uncle #5". I took a look at the family tree and think that the Graham (Graeme?) you know is probably from "Uncle #10" which would be the same side of the family (great grandmother)

Graham's grandfather is Uncle #3 from great grandmother Dong Shee.
