Dear All
I hope you can kindly help me to locate my ancestry home town as I would like to bring my elderly father for a visit this October. My grandfather went to Malaysia and my father was borned there. We are Cantonese and our surname is Leong. My father said that we are Pun Yu (in Cantonese) (Panyu in Mandarin) and our village name is Tong Kai (in Cantonese; Tong as in Tang dynasty and Kai as in small river/stream).
I understand that there is a TangXi development zone at Hetang town in Jiangmen city. The writing of TangXi seems correct to what my father says. However, is there another Tong Kai in Panyu or is the one at Hetang also considered Panyu?
Does anyone know more about Tong Kai village? Is there any map or pictures to see more about it?
Many many thanks in advance.

Panyu is today a part of Guangzhou City whereas Jiangmen City is another separate region to the SW. Have found a total of 6 villages with xi (kai) but no Tangxi. Here is a fairly detailed map of Panyu area www.9654.com/m/panyu.htm maybe you have better luck. The closest is Hanxi (where Han as in Han Dynasty) located just NNW of Panyu town.

Thank you very much, twoupman. I appreciate your reply and information. I think my ancestral village is that "Tong Kai" (Tangxi) in Jiangmen. I wonder if there are still ancestral temples in such villages.
Thanks again.

Sorry to disappoint you but the Tangxi (¶í·Ë) on Hetang (²ü¶í) island in Jiangmen does not mean Tang as in Tang Dynasty (ð´Â) but Tang as in a pool. Have a look at this map: www.9654.com/m/jm.htm where Tangxi (¶í·Ë) is shown on the NW corner of Hetang island.

Look at the map of southern Guangdong province I previously posted: siyigenealogy.proboards28.com/index.cgi?board=maps&action=display&thread=1183742372The place-names are in both Chinese and English - just south of Guangzhou (Canton) is Panyu. Further southwest is the city of Jiangman - just northeast of Jiangman city is Hetang Island where Tangxi village is located. Twoupman provided you with a map that shows the location of Hetang Island in relation to Jiangman city: www.9654.com/m/jm.htm If you are doing just a day trip visit to Tangxi village - you may want to stay in Guangzhou and hire a hotel car or taxi to drive down to your ancestral village. If you intend to have an extended visit to your ancestral village, I suggest staying in Jiangman city and hiring a taxi to the village each day. Good luck www.9654.com/m/jm.htm

Panyu is located SW of Guangzhou on the west side of the Pearl River Delta whereas Zengcheng is located SE of Guangzhou on the east side of the Pearl River Delta (above HongKong). I believe you are going about your search the wrong way. Your father said the village is in Panyu, so you should get the correct village name first and then do your search. Surely somebody should be able to verify the village name.

Thank you so much to all of you. My father is sure our ancestors are from Panyu and the village is "Tong Kai" (in Cantonese). He is now trying to figure out which "Tong". I understand that there is a Panyu association in Singapore so I am going to find out from them. Thanks to all for your help so far. I really appreciate it.

I assume your grandfather is buried in Malaysia? If so, a visit to his grave will probably have the name of the village and county inscribed on it in Chinese. Just a thought and worth a try. Panyu with Shunde and Nanhai was called Sanyi (3 districts) in the past.

During my last two visits, I dropped by Panyue... to visit some relations.
Unfortunately, a good portion of Panyue has been redeveloped into the new "University city" (Di Hock Sing). There had been a lot of bad feelings between the local Panyue people with the government - due to the evictions and expropriation of property.
I hope your ancestral village was one of those that had been spared.
Good luck

Thank you to all the kind people who have replied and offered your assistance. I am very grateful. Based on the tips provided, I located the Panyu association in Singapore (known as Singapore Poon Yue Association). It appears that there was a "Tong Kai" village in Panyu before but the area has been redeveloped and the village no longer exists. That is why we cannot locate it in the maps currently available.
Anyway, I still intend to bring my father to visit Panyu. I think he will be very happy to just be there.
Thank you again.
