My greatgrandfather was from Toi Shan. He was born in 1871 and came to Hawaii when he was around 16. He was a cook on a sugar plantation. We are trying to find his Chinese character for his name. He is listed on the census records several different ways so we aren't sure what his Chinese name is. In 1900 he is listed as Ah Fong. Later on he goes by Say Fong. His children have the surname of Shea. Does anyone have any suggestions of how to find his Chinese Characters? Thanks

Welcome to the Forum, A digital photo of your great granfather's gravestone would probably have the Chinese characters for his name, the name of his village, county, and province of birth. You can post the photo by following the directions: siyigenealogy.proboards28.com/index.cgi?board=comment&action=display&thread=421We have members that can read the Chinese and provide you with the information that you want. Since your ggf came from Taishan, then his name Fong Say would be a transliteration from that dialect. His surname was 鄺 pronounced Kuang in Mandarin, Kwong in Cantonese but Fong in Taishanese. You can find out all the possible villages in Taishan where this surname may be found at this site: www.c-c-c.org/villagedb/search.cgi using Fong. As for his personal name Sai, it may be this character 犀 (a guess on my part) which means armor. houseofchinn.com
