I am trying to locate a "Tam" aka "Hom" ie, 譚 village.
The full "address" is as follows:

On the Village db, the map reference is FQ 0884. and I can locate 杜澄鄉 but not the lower level
Can you help? Thanks.

Ah Gin, I was unable to locate 滙 源 里 [ Huiyuan hamlet ] on any of my maps, however, I am including a part of the Hoiping map that came with the Hoiping volume that provided the information for the Village Database to show the general location of this hamlet. I have annotated 杜 澄 鄉 [ To Ching heung district ] and the 杜 崗 [ To Kong ] market town - Huiyuan hamlet was/is located in the vicinity of the To Kong market town and with a location that is close to the downtown area of Hoiping/Kaiping - this small hamlet could have been easily absorbed into the urban sprawl. I think when you are in Hoiping/Kaiping - the local taxi driver and/or Kaiping city/county government can provide the exact location. Henry mysite.verizon.net/vzepzaui/Old Hoiping.jpg[/img]

tyuti1668, Thanks for the list of Overseas Magazines published at Kaiping. {The list probably needs updating} It interesting to note that our Clan O/s 舜河侨刊 is also listed. I am on their distribution list.
Henry, Many thanks for speedy and helpful response. As you say, the local taxi, or local motor cycle taxi service should be able to take me to the hamlet. Can I trouble you for the Chinese version? My list of "to do" things at Kaiping is filling up, which is good.

Henry,
Sorry. My typing is quicker than my brain -- the effect of living Down Under. What I meant was, that part of the map in Chinese, ie the Chinese Map. Maybe it's already on one of the maps on this MB -- I have not yet explored. With the above attached map I constantly am going the process of trying to determine the actual Chinese character -- not that I am a real expert in Chinese, but enough to make a fool of myself ;-) and also to find it. I am also hoping to use the map, show it to the locals, and say, "Take me there. And don't try the long route either :-) )

tyuti1668,
Amazing, or as the young ones say, "awesome". I should have remembered to use ditu. Very close to the river for a spot of fishing -- which of course is not surprising -- given that it is on the rive delta system. Must remember to bring a pair of Wellington if I do visit the village. :-)
Many thanks.

tyuti1668,
Post Script: I can even see the 澄溪侨刊 office just across the river.

Further note: The village is about 2km from the hotel where our Gin Clan Conference will be held in Nov 2008, namely the Graden Hotel, not far away from the hospital. So I guess one early morning I can take a walk to the Tom Village. Great Ditu site.

Ah Gin, There is no Chinese version of the map - just one map for each of the 4 volumes that comprise the Village Database which is based upon "Index of Clan Names by Village", published by the American Consulate General, Hong Kong in the 1960's - these volumes were in English with Chinese characters for the village names and used to interrogate Chinese applying for US visas and suspected of being "paper" sons or daughters. These maps are all and only available on my website "Tom Genealogy". To view these maps, please go to: mysite.verizon.net/vzepzaui/maps3.htmlMouse over the map that you want, right click, save the map as a JPG image. Thanks to tyuti668 for teaching this "old" dog a new trick with "51ditu.com" Here is the map he generated and I annotated: Henry
