I'm an American trying to research my Chinese roots. I've been fortunate enough to locate the Chinese Exclusion files for my grandfather, grand-uncle (and his sons), as well as my great-grandfather. There are a lot of names in there, but I don't know where to start, since the spellings are often different in english. Family name is Hor. My grandfather's paperwork say he was born in Sah Wan village of Pun Yu district. Anyone know where this might be? It didn't sound like it was a small village. There were "aboout 3,000 homes" according to his interrogation that took place in the 1920s.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.

The more common Cantonese version of your surname is Ho or He in pinyin. Sah Wan or Shawan is southwest of Panyu City (see map)

Thanks! I think I had narrowed it down to Panyu city before. Just so we're on the same page, is that Panyu city just outside Guangzhou in Guangdong? I can see Panyu on a current map to China I have, but I can't find Shawan. In fact, the index for this map shows Shawan WAY up in the North of China near the Russian border. At any rate, could you send me that same map, but backed up a bit, so I can see it more on the province level?
Thanks again so much...I want to eventually take my mother over there so she can see where her father came from. Would like to make sure it's the right place!

It is the Panyu city just outside Guangzhou in Guangdong. It is not uncommon to see towns, villages or counties having the same name. So a Shawan in Northern China doesn't come as a surprise.
I'll email the map showing Guangzhou to the north and Shunde to the southwest to you via yousendit.com rather than as an attachment to an email.
