Haddon, south-west of Ballarat, Australia Between 1851-1861, 43,657 Chinese entered the colony of Victoria. The strangeness of men’s clothing and long cues (pigtails), different language and unusual food led to their being discriminated against, and they were segregated into villages like those at Haddon and Nintingbool. They were resented not only for their different culture but also because they were such hard and successful workers. Chin Ah Chin’s children suffered prejudice from these racist attitudes, and in adulthood decided to change their name to Chinn, which they told the next generation was Welsh in origin. www.ballaratgenealogy.org.au/link0502.pdf
