my greatgrandfather came from Canton to Cuba and then Dominican Republic. I was told his surname was Ma. I also understand his name sounded like Sin Sa Ma. this was in the late 1880s. Not sure why the Ma is at the end and not the begining . Please advise if this is related to the same surname.

Ma at end because that how Chinese write from right to left. Now, people write both ways, from left or from right.

Mucha suerte y gracias nuevamente! ♥

Gina, this is Carlos and me in Melbourne earlier in the year during Feb / March. I was in Melbourne for a wedding reception, and we met for the first time. I also met two other friends made through this Forum during my time in Melbourne. Carlos will be my guest tonight at a dinner party. He surprised me by his snap decision to come to China. He is most warmly welcomed by his extended family here in China and Macau. I'll get him to tell a little bit of his story in Spanish. Anyway, Carlos' search is in my earlier thread My Excellent Adventures in China. I can't give the exact page number.

Douglas,
It is wonderful that you were able to get together with Carlos, I was pleasantly surprised when he wrote to me in Spanish earlier, and I'm very glad that you two are having a great time!
I can search on your posts for Carlos' family investigation! One thing I was telling Carlos (in my previous message) is that my great-grandfather was supposed to travel to Peru, but he decided to stay in Panama (where the ship made a stop). It was a very nice coincidence, that both of us are here in this forum, looking (and finding) for information on our ancestors in China.
Hope you both have the best of time!
Gina

Hi Gina,
You are right, I have a aunt and her surname is Rios. Well it is a coincidence that looking for our family roots. Well after help to Douglas in his adventure. It was a good experience help to Douglas, during the hunt i learned a lot how to find village and people. So now you know the village of you family who lived many years or maybe hundreds of years in that area. Genealogy search never ends, I got interested in research more about my Chinese roots. I mean search the genealogy tree.

Hi Carlos,
It is a coincidence indeed. I'm just amazed at how small the world is, and if we search hard enough, we are all related in a way or another.
The wonderful people in this forum has renewed my hopes in the world and finding more about my Chinese ancestry..., and the treasure of finding the exact city where they lived for hundreds of years it's a treasure, and I will be for ever grateful!
We learn new things each year, but as with you (tho your experience is greater than mine as you were able to learn processes first handed), learning new things about our families is the most gratifying thing, and I will try to help others to be as lucky or more as I am.
