laohuaqiao,
Thank you for your step-by-step direction. You have written is so clearly I can now picture it in my mind. It is helpful. It eliminates the feeling of being lost in a new place.
When in Kaiping, do you know where are the convenient accommodation available as base to search for my ancestral location. Thank you.

Thank you for all the helpful people in this forum for all your advice and invaluable information.
I am booking my flight for 17th June 2013. Planning to stay 3 days in Kaiping, 1 night in Shenzhen and 2 nights in Hongkong.
Is this period a good time to travel to Kaiping?

It is the monsoon season, wet, hot and humid. Just take it in your stride.

Fay Chee,
Thank you. Thank you. I just sent to you my email. Did you receive it?
Frankly, you can learn to read, write and understand Chinese characters very easily. There is a software you can download to your smartphone by Pleco. It is a blue colour icon. Go check it out. It can translate both Chinese characters (Taiwan/Hong Kong/Malaysia) and Chinese Characters (PRC) to English. It is easy to input the Chinese characters just by drawing roughly what you see. You do not even need to follow the Chinese strokes or spelling out in Hanyu Pinyin. Let me know if you need further help.
With this software, you can too appreciate your ancestral poems and all that you had obtained and written in Chinese!

Helen,
Delicious! Lychee is the next best fruit to longan (longyan) for me. Zeng Cheng is to the east of Guangzhou. It is some way from Kaiping my target destination.

douglaslam,
Oh no! You said, "It is the monsoon season, wet, hot and humid...".
Looks like it is going to be an arduous journey ahead for me. *Sigh*

Help! What do you usually do when you arrived at your ancestral village. How to start first things first.
I read Angela's recent exploration. Looks like I too need to have a game plan. Otherwise, it may turn out to be searching a needle in the hay stack. It can be daunting.

When in Kaiping, do you know where are the convenient accommodation available as base to search for my ancestral location. Thank you. Recently. I have stayed at Parklane Hotel in Kaiping. it's part of a chain in Jiangmen area. 柏丽 连锁 酒店 (幕沙店) 广东省 开平市 长沙区 幕桥东路18号 529300 It's at the city center, not far from the two main bus terminals in Kaiping. The rooms start at 150 RMB/day, reasonably clean and comfortable. There are restaurants close by. www.fantong.com/biz-1169004/

laohuaqiao,chansomvia,
I am booked on Cathay Pacific arriving early in the morning on 16th Jun 2013. I will take the 11:15 hrs Skypier ferry to Zhuhai. From Zhuhai, I will take a bus to Kaiping.
Do you happen to know the bus company websites next to Zhuhai's ferry terminal (Jiuzhougang terminal) to check on the time-table? I wish to check on the available bus schedule to Kaiping. Like laohuaqiao mentioned, "If there is no bus or there is a long wait before the next bus, take a taxi to Gongbei Bus terminal ¹°±± ³¤Í¾ Æû³µ ×ÜÕ¾". How far is Gongbei Bus terminal jsut in case I need to go there? Thank you.

From the website legacy1.net/ng-%E5%90%B3/I found these places: Bat Sing Heung (°ËÐÕàl) Nam On Lay (ÄÏ°²Àï) 22.3623,112.656941 Bat Sing Heung (°ËÐÕàl) Sun Tin Lay (ÐÂÌïÀï) 22.376389,112.679901 I used the google map to view these locations. Can someone advise me whether these locations resemble city areas or villages. Or, any local knowledge of these locations. Thank you.

Wow! I just saw from my iPad map (Satellite map probably a few years ago) Nam On Lay (ÄÏ°²Àï). Impressive. The entire village is still intact bounded by a main river to the south and numerous ponds to the north, east and west. Looks like the access to the village only by bunds. Coordinates I obtained from legacy1.net/ng-%E5%90%B3/ not so accurate. I managed to use Baidu maps to locate village (somewhere to the given coordinates). A lot more written information in Baidu maps.

ngkokweng, As mentioned before, the coordinates are not exact, depending on the map makers location of the labels. I was the one who changed the coordinates on the Village Database based on our discussion here. One map placed little higher, one map placed little lower. It may have something to do with the center of town or in a city the location of City Hall.
We believe "Bat Sing Heung (°ËÐÕàl) Nam On Lay (ÄÏ°²Àï)" is closer to your village than "Bat Sing Heung (°ËÐÕàl) Sun Tin Lay (ÐÂÌïÀï)'. The village committee should be contacted to get more information.
