Hi Michel, Call me weird, but I really love seeing old tombstones. The last one is exceptionally beautiful! Thanks for posting it.

thank you for the information. this is the chart I got from liuyao's jinshi family tree. I still have trouble to trace the father my ancestor, 施荷農 / 施荷农 with his grandfather 施調賡 / 施調赓.

Wow, these tombstones contain a lot of information.
The first two are the tombstone of 魏萱娘 (As you may be well aware of, Fujian women tend to have 娘 Nio as the ending... I never quite understand the custom. It seems not really part of one's name.)
On the left it says
son: 荷農 grandsons: 貽訓 貽全 貽穀 貽祿 貽順, in this order. The first one is singled out as the "bearing weight grandson", indicating that his father predeceased his grandmother, so he was to lead the mourning in his father's stead. great-grandsons: 德勇 德民 德耀 德惠
The third, fourth and fifth photos are of 荷農 and his wife 張月娘, erected by: sons: 貽全 貽祿 貽順 daughters: 紫蘭 紫娟 薇苓? 紫苓? 杏仙 grandson: 德惠 granddaughters: X如 X英

liuyao thank you very much. I will consult my family members about this. the first tombstone was my great grandfather's mother indeed, but I don't really understand why it only mentioned his only son was 荷農. from what I heard, 荷農 had another brother (whose name I still investigate). 貽訓 貽全 貽穀 貽祿 貽順 are my grandparents. 貽全 was my grandfather, Sie Ie Tjoan I guess.
德勇 德耀 德民 are the grandsons of 荷農's brother I believe. their father was Sie Ie Hoen (1906-1973) who marrried with Tjoe Pek Eng. I got the letter from 德耀. Sie Te Ming, I'm not too familiar with this person but I think he's the one that supposed to take care our house at zhanghzhou (said my aunt). But she wasn't able to meet him during her visit on april.
德惠 is my father's cousin, his father was Sie Ie Lok (貽祿?)
So the right tombstone was my great grandfather and his wife. I see. From what I know, his wife was named Thio Gwee Nio. but when I entered "張月娘" into google translate, it gives me Zhāng yuè niáng. Is "Thio Gwee Nio" derived from minnan dialect?
sons: confirmed daughters: confirmed, I will look for the missing characters next time grandson : confirmed granddaughters: probably one of my aunties
thank you very much for all your help!

Maybe 荷農 was alive at his mother's death, but his elder brother (father of 貽訓, possibly also of 貽穀) had died, so was not mentioned in "erected by".
Yes, they would all be known in Minnan dialect, so Google translate is of little help.
It looks like these two tombstones are new, and the old ones are the darker ones in the back.

yes, the old gravestones are the one in the back. but another thing I don't understand, why my maternal great great grandmother's husband was not mentioned on her gravestone? Isn't it chinese culture to mention the name of the husband on the grave?
Also, here's what I gotten from my uncle (Lie Siek Tjan) about my great grandfather. He was Sie Ho Long's most favorite grandson. My great grandfather often slept with him when he was a child. It feels... just heartwarming when I saw my uncles and aunties were talking about Sie Ho Long and recalled their childhood, even when they have become grandfathers:

hi guys, I haven't logged on this forum for a long time. I have hit a wall with my chinese genealogy tree I think and I don't think there is anything I can do further.
However I read that the Chinese government will issue a special visa for foreigners of chinese descent and they can permanently stay in China for 5 years. I really want to try applying this visa, but unfortunately I couldn't find a single document that states my great grandfather was a citizen of PRC since he left China in 1920s. The only document I could find is a paper issued by the Indonesian government that stated my great grandparent was born in China, and his child (my grandfather) renounced his Chinese citizenship.
I am wondering if there is any hope that the Chinese government still preserve my great grandfather's birth certificate in China.
