Your 'conversations' interest me very much. I am in search of our ancestry now and came across this website which is so informative.

My dad just passed on and there was a question the family could not really answer when we were asked of my dad's ancestral lineage. Now, we always remember my grandfather saying that we were from Lum-uah, however, what was inscribed on my grandfather's tomb was Tong-uah. A cousin suggested that Lum-uah was probably within Tong-uah, then. Would this be correct?

Theowlscribe, for your info, we are in bukit mertajam (where permatang pauh is). My home is now in subang jaya, however, since my dad's passing, I have been staying here accompanying my mum.

My great great grandfather was the one who came from China, probably in the late 1800. My great grandfather and grandfather were already born here. Am trying to find my great grandfather's tomb now. Hopefully the Lee Association will be able to help since they manage the Hockien cemetry in Kubang Semang.

Am wondering too if anyone has the map of Lum-uah. Would love to have a look and would be interesting to make a visit.

Hi Jelee,

Lum-uah (Nan’an 南安) is a county. In Selangor equivalent, it would like a district just like Ulu Langat. Can you provide the Chinese characters for “Tong-uah”. I would think Tong-uah would be within Lum-uah and not the other way round as you cousin had suggested. Lum-uah County is next and before the Eng-choon (Yongchun永春) County where my ancestor originated from. From my observation, people now from Lum-uah are more prosperous than Eng-choon. Lee Kong Chian (李光前) is the very famous from Lum-uah. He is the one who donated the mosaic mural adorning the front of Muzium Negara. The Lee Foundation he established is big annual donor to Montfort Boys Town where I am currently the Chairman of the Board of Governors.

As to locating your great grandfather's tomb within the Hockien cemetery at Kubang Semang, do check with the office managing it by giving them the approximate date he had passed away and his name in Chinese characters. There should have old records of his burial location; if the burial record books were not lost and are still been kept. Once a lady from KL contacted to me asking how to find her ancestral place in Kwong Tung (Guangdong廣東) , China as her 80+ year old father wanted to visit it for the first time. I told her to locate her grandfather’s grave which she knew was in Kwong Tung cemetery, at the Old Airport Road in KL. I told her to check out the burial records at the office there. She did and the lady there managed to locate the burial site. When they went to the burial site, another burial was buried over it. However she managed to locate her ancestral village. After taking her father back to their ancestral place in China and upon returning, she phoned me to tell me the story. She said her father was so emotional in able to see the ancestral village and upon returning to KL he wanted to bring some symbolic earth from the burial site back to the ancestral village. She asked me how to go about it.

If you intend to Lum-uah, I suggest you find the Chinese characters for Tong-uah first. Off hand, I would hazard a guess that the Chinese characters for Tong-uah could be同安. In any case confirm with what is written on the gravestone of your grandfather. Then search for its location through Google. If the name had not change since older times, you should be able to locate it. When going there you should locate your Lee clan ancestral records as well.

Hi Jelee,sorry for such a late reply. I was away for a month. Just found your "conversation". So your ancestors came from Lam-uah too. If you find the place in China kindly do update us here. I had always thought the whole county is populated by the Yek (Yeap or Yip) clan. So there are also Lees who originate from Lam-uah. It seems the county is populated only by the Hokkiens. My paternal grandparents and most of my paternal relatives are also buried at Kota Semang,Bukit Mertajam. I had my primary and secondary education at BM.


Follow Philip Tan's advice. All the best in your search. I think we all need to see our "roots" in our twilight years so we can finally be at peace with ourselves.

i am a Sim, a second generation in Singapore.  During the years 1976-1999, my siblings and i have accompanied my father to his ancestor village in Anxi and neighouring villages as he also had sister living in Lam uah.

Since dad passed away, we have made another visit to the village but we have not developed contacts with extended relatives.  My brother and i intend to visit Anxi again but our dear cousin in Xiamen who was our driver, guide and contact, passed away suddenly from an illness.  May i know if any of you know how we can get there on our own, as the village when we last left the place was still not well developed, short of a shoe factory and a granite producer.

This thread seems to have died a natural death. How have you been? You're indeed correct to say that Lam'uah is the county of Nan'an (nan=lam,meaning south). I figured this out recently while watching a made-in-china historical drama of the warring period. I have still not been able to visit Nan'an so I can only speculate but I'm certain Nan'an is in minan while Lam'uah is in hokkien. Hope to hear from you and hope everyone here is doing fine. Time flies. It has been 4 years since I started this thread.

Looks like our ancestors came from the same village in china. The ye,sim and yew are related. I'm unable to help you as I had never gone back to have a look. I'm making my third trip to china yet I've to keep the best for last I guess. This time I'm going to sichuan,next year to the grasslands and after that to cruise the yangtze. I guess lam'uah will have to wait but I will go before my final journey into the next life LOL. It takes many trips before we can say we have seen china.

Mr Lee Kong Chian is a very famous hokkien of the Lee rubber family. It was thanks to a financial aid from the Lee Foundation that enabled me to attend Form 6,and then onward to university. I've never forgotten what the Lee Foundation had done for me.

Did you manage to find anything you were looking for? My paternal grandfather also came from Lam'uah and in fact he made his home just a short distance away from permatang pauh,a malay kampung called permatang janggus,located in between permatang pauh and permatang tok'kandu (old name sungai/kampung derhaka bcs of the river which flowed against its mother LOL). My uncles and cousins are still living at permatang janggus.

Anxi is another province that has the majority population of Hokkien. Most of the Hokkien in Singapore are either from Nan an of from Anxi. In Singapore, the Tan, Chua, Koh, Kho and Kuah are mostly from Anxi which is next to Xiamen. With the new road compled in 2016, it takes about 45 minutes to travel by car from Xiamen airport to Anxi.

Lam-uah, you mentioned above is confirmed as Lam-uah in the olden days. Most of the Hokien in Singapore came from Xiangyunzhen, Nanan. It takes about 45 minutes by car to travel from Yong Chun to Xiangyunzhen. Appended below is the distribution of the various surnames in XiangyunZhen.

We are Chinese from Medan, Indonesian. My father's grandparent was from Anxi from Kho (XU in mandarin) Clan and my Mother came from Nan An, from NIO (Liang in Mandarin) clan.

From my father's memory, my ancestor village from my father side's was from Hokkien - An Khue - Kong Tek Li - Be Tau hHo, is this sound like an address? Is it enough information to locate our ancestor's village and their tombs?

Hi Wina,

You said the ancestral place in China for your paternal side of your family originated from is “Ah Khue”. For the same Chinese characters, transliteration of the name using the dialect you used, and from the country you are in, it is likely they would appear different. Anxi is the Pinyin for安溪 and in Malaysia using the Southern Fujian dialect (Minnan) it would sound like “Ann Kooi” which I suppose could be “Ah Khue” that you had quoted. When you said that your father's grandparent was from “Anxi from Kho (XU in mandarin) Clan, would it be that “XU” be written as “許” in traditional Chinese character, or “许” in simplified Chinese character (in Minnan dialect it would be pronounced as “Koh” or “Kho” or “Khor” or “Co” or “Khaw”)?

If Xu (許/许) is indeed that of your surname and your ancestral place is indeed from Anxi (安溪), I could post the various town in Anxi (安溪) and the villages within each town showing the number of Xu (許/许) living in each of them. This would be according to the census done on December 2004.

When you mentioned “Be Tau Hio (probably is 馬頭鄉)”, I think it could be Ma Tou Cun in Pinyin. If so,it would be written as “碼頭村” or “码头村”. This village had 1962 people with the surname Xu (許) and it is within the town of Cheng Xiang Zhen (城廂鎮). Cheng Xiang Zhen (城廂鎮) is within Anxi (安溪) county and had the most people with the surname Xu (許), at 8,576 people, among the towns within the whole of Anxi (安溪) county. Anxi (安溪) county itself had 30,363 people with the surname Xu (許); Xu (許) being the 9th most populous within Anxi (安溪) county. I could count 10 Xu (許) clans within Anxi (安溪) county.

If you could quote the sequence of generation names of your Xu (許) clan, I could probably identify which among the Xu (許) clans that you belong to. If what I interpret from your posting is correct, I think you should have no problem finding your root and hence find your ancestral records (jiapu or zupu). In the meantime you should record the names of your ancestors (in Chinese characters) from your great grandfather downwards.

Thanks for suggestions. Unfortunately that's what my father told me. Only these 3 names. Nan'an, Hong Lai Street and "Chui Chnee Cak" in Hokkien. Don't have any Chinese characters as I am English educated and he passed on without anymore info. From what I gathered, he came through Singapore in the 1930s during the migration to run away from the turmoil then. He yearned to go home those days but we were very young and poor then. More so, he couldn't get a passport.

I am prepared to go to Nan'an just to look at the place, breathe the air or if there's any Wu family there I can talk to. Or dropping by any temples in Nan'an to offer silent prayers to pay homage on behalf of my father.

If there's anyone who has these information, it would be greatly appreciated.
