Hi Henry,
Thank you for that link, I printed out the list for future reference. My Sister's husband was a Tom/Tam/Tan, although he continued to use his paper son name in the USA. They built a home in Xinqiaotou and adopted a Tan orphan in 1944. Five days ago I made contact with the grandchildren of that son and they immediately started calling me 'Great-Aunt'. Life is wonderful!

Hi Henry,
I joined a couple of days ago, but am a bit lost on how to navigate this site to ask my question. I found this section titled "Looking for ancestors villages" which relates to my enquiry below, and hope it reaches you.
How can I locate my maternal great-grandfather's home in China?
My mother wrote down some brief details in Chinese of her father’s village before she passed away in 2022.
Based on her writings, which I had translated to English, her father Yao Huang (耀 黃) was born in 1896 in Huangchong (黄冲), Xinhui, Guangdong. He worked in his father’s (Zu-Chuan Huang 祖傳 黃) restaurant until he was 16. He then left China to start a new life in Malaya (now Malaysia) as he was unhappy working in his father’s roast goose restaurant that was also popular with customers from Hong Kong and Macao.
My mother also told me that when the war broke out in Malaya in 1940/41, her father wanted to bring his family back to his father's Zu-Chuang Huang's home in China, but was told his home was destroyed in Japanese bombing raids. So he never thought to return to China after hearing this. But I often wonder how accurate this information is.
I have tried writing to the Huang association in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Malaysia where my grandfather had settled, but I received no response. (I left Malaysia in 1974 and have been living in Australia since then).
With only these meagre details, how can I locate my great-grandfather's (Zu-Chuan Huang 祖傳 黃) home, and who should I get in touch with in Guangdong?
As I don’t read nor speak Chinese, except basic Cantonese, I need help from sources that can communicate in English, as I would like to visit my great-grandfather’s (Zu-Chuan Huang 祖傳 黃) home if it still exists and can be found, and if not, at least the village where he lived and worked.
I would appreciate any help in this regard.
Thanks very much.

Probably, when he migrated to Malaysia, his name was not entered into the zupu. Do you know if the names of your maternal gf & ggf were the birth names or their marriage names? Generally the names in a genealogy are according to the marriage name & also by the birth name if they were unmarried at the time of the compilation of the genealogy book. Since this zupu was recently published as a compilation of the Huang clan - a researcher may have to visit both the original & new villages to check the original village genealogy. Another reason why your maternal ggf's name is not in the 2011 Huang genealogy is because - this might be for the "new" Huangchong village and did not include the recent ancestors during the past 50 -100 years from the original village. If a researcher went to the original Huangchong village - the name may be in the original genealogy book for this village. You can probably buy both copies of the history & zupu from My China Roots & they can send a researcher to the villages to conduct more detailed research. Both books in PDF versions have been OCR processed so they are searchable electronically, but, you can highlight the narratives in the history book & paste them into any of the online Chinese translators to get an English translation. By the way, your ancestral roots in quite a famous area - Yamen en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_YamenI hope this helps. Henry

Hi Henry, My search for the Chan clan ancestral village in Shunde has been very challenging given the minimal information that I've obtained. The latest name I have of my village is Dai gao xiang from a relative. I am hopeful this village still exists or that someone is familiar with this name. Thank you.

My name is Long Foo Lum ( mandarin- Long Foo Leng) from Malaysia. My father was from Hainan. I am interested to locate my ancestors village and home. My father’s 5th brother was a suave gentleman not sure he is still around who has a son ( my cousin) who is a middleman for or in export of pepper as I was told . I was also told to reach the ancestors home I have to travel from Haikou to “Boon show “ and to “A show koi” in Long Village . I would appreciate if someone can show or lead me to my cousin or the Long Village in Hainan

Hi Danny:
If you can, please provide the Chinese characters for your surname and for the place names you have mentioned. It looks like these words may be in Hainanese, a language with which most of us are unfamiliar.

Maybe someone from Hainan who knows English and mandarin will be able to help, especially someone who has a similar surname and from LONG Village

Hi Danny: www.loongfeng.org/hai-nan-xing-shi-tan-yuan-long-shi-pian/The above page from a Long clan website contains an excellent history of the Long clan in Hainan. It is in Chinese, but if you are interested you could try using Google translate to catch the gist of what the writer is saying. The article mentions a "Long Family Village" or Longjia Cun located in Wenchang City, Huiwen Town (文昌市会文镇龙家村). It still exists. You have referred to "Long Village" but I don't know if you are saying that is the name of the village or that it is a village of some unknown name inhabited by Long clan members. But if it is the name of the village, this could be it. Greg

dannylong,
Use Google Chrome - paste in the nice link Greg gave you - the website will come up in Chinese, in the upper right corner, see the 3 vertical dots - click on them, then click on "Translate", select "English". Handy little trick:-)
