Christian, Try using some of these techniques to start your genealogy search in this Wiki: How to Start Your Chinese Family Heritage Researchclick. Check the link below to get facile with using Chinese characters. You are fortunate to have relatives still in China, although in a different province from your ancestral village. Regardless, as you build your database and genealogy family tree, you might be able to contact those relatives to fill in the blanks, and hopefully get a copy of your Family Genealogy records ( Jiapuclick) Doug

Dear Christian, Welcome to the Forum! To read the Chinese characters please select "View", "Encoding", "More" and "Unicode (UTF-8)".If your name Chen Jian Hui is in Pinyin, then I am quite positive that your surname in Chinese character is 陳, or 陈 in simplified Chinese character. You said you are from "Ankwee" region in Fujian. I suspect "Ankwee" is in Minnan language for Anxi (安溪). Minnan is my mother tongue and is the language for Ankwee. When I was as a kid growing up in a village in Malaysia many of my friends are from Ankwee/Anxi. Quite many of them are with either surname Chen (陳) (or Tan in Minnan language) or Lin/Lim (æž—). Anxi (安溪) county is next Yongchun (永春) where my ancestors originated from. See the map below: It is also possible that your branch of Chen could have a common ancestor as mine and not too far back in the past; i.e. subsequent to the first Chen ancestor (é™³æ ¡æ…° also known as 陳弘元) of my branch who first settled in Xiaohu (å°å²µ), Yongchun county. During the Yuan Dynasty, there were two rebellions against the Mongol rule. According to "Yongchun Gazette" (永春县志): "In 1277, the Mongolian army invaded Fujian province and the Chen clan of Penghu (蓬壶), together with the Cai (蔡) clan of Dongyuan (东å›) took part in resisting the Mongolian army. When they were defeated, the Chen clan was almost completed wiped out." Towards the end of the Yuan Dynasty, in 1354, in what is known as the "Liu Er Hua Incedent" (å…二花事件), the Chen clan took part in a rebellion against the Mongolian rule led by Chen Zhan (陈å ) of Hua Shi (花石). My 19th great grandfather (Chen Zhenyou (陳真ç¥))'s second, third, fourth and eighth sons were killed and their properties were confiscated. Zhenyou's (真佑) third son Junzhi (å›æ²») moved his family out of Xiaohu (å°å²µ) and his decedents are to be found in various part of Fujian province. My 18th great grandfather (Chen Junze’s (陳å›æ³½)) eldest son GÅng Yìn (å…¬è«) first escaped to Xianyou (仙游), then moved to Anxi (安溪). His decedents are to be found in various parts of Fujian and Jiangxi provinces. Junze’s second son, Gong Mao (公茂), took his whole family to Nan'an (å—安) to live with his wife’s Li (æŽ) family. His decedents are to be found in various parts of Fujian province. There are in Yongchun Hushan (永春岵山), Xianjia (仙夹), Taocheng (桃城), Shigu (石鼓), Huyang (æ¹–æ´‹), Dongping (东平), Nan'an Shishan (å—安诗山), Anxi Penglai (安溪蓬莱), Dehua Houliao (å¾·åŽåŽå¯®), Fuding (ç¦é¼Ž), Xiapu (霞浦) as well as Cangnan (è‹å—) and Taishun (泰顺) in Zhejiang (浙江) province. There are 90 branches that descended from Chen ancestor (é™³æ ¡æ…°) and settled in various counties as indicated below. He has thirteen Chen branches that descended from him that had settled in Anxi. I have an Anxi map in Chinese. If you can provide the Chinese characters for your ancestral village "Gozheng", I shall ask my friend whether he could locate it on the map. Do take a picture of your grandfather’s gravestone to see what information it might yield. Regards, Philip

In the posting at siyigenealogy.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=names&thread=1752&page=1#11054Elmer Li of Netherland was searching for his ancestry in Fujian. Following his posting, Elmer and I had exchange ideas through emails and through Skype. Whilst Elmer has considerable details of his ancestry, quite substantial amount were missing. Through his contacts in Xiamen I suggested that he should get in touch with Professor Xu Jinding of Oversea Chinese Institute, Huaqiao University of Xiamen (in Fujian, China), the Chinese genealogy expert who gave the talk referred to at the start of this thread. I am happy to announce that I just received an email from Elmer saying he will be having an appointment with Professor Xu this Sunday. Professor is very interested in meeting him and has offered to join him on 22 October 2012 when he visits his ancestral village. May I wish Elmer Li every success in his genealogical search. Philip
