it's supposed to mean I am "sending him a link to Geni". That is where I have built our family tree and where he can view it.
For sending pics he has my email and has sent a couple before
I can type pinyin on my keyboard---but how do I know what to type? I have seen a pinyin dictionary---but do I type out each word as if they were spoken in English? For example-- Do you want to go for a walk to the store? Do I then type the pinyin for each individual word???

Afraid you can't do that. You'll have to translate it into Chinese first in order to account for grammatical and other differences between the two languages. Very often the order is reversed. Since you are in Canada and we all had French classes in school, we'll compare English and French. In English the simple phrase "my name is..." becomes "I call myself..." in French. Where about in Canada are you? I'm on the wet coast. Here is the revision:

I'm in Burnaby. Guess this makes us neighbours. Let me know whenever you are coming into town, we'll get together for coffee or dimsum.

Well my great nephew emailed me some more pics. I now have a pic of my father's son and his wife. I am trying to have him clarify a few things as well. He also sent me some village pics. Just wondering if anyone knows of this village. It is one of the pics he sent me. Also there is a side view of another sign and I was looking at it and it seems to me the first 3 characters are the same as the first pic "Wu Shi village" sign. If it'spossible could someone tell me what the side view sign says Thanks

Hi Rick - That's the very same sign I took a photo of. We were going from Sun Gaai to Gualin on the 10 June, and it is between the 2 villages. It said 200 m, from the sign. We started walking there - but it was at least 800 meters. It's easy to find. I now have a guide available for Zengcheng - who can arrange transport. Now we need an English speaker to act as interpreter. PS It had escaped my memory that the village was in fact Cheung Dai - otherwise I would have made more an effort to get there. It was so hot walking and we had already spent 2 hours in one village. Turns out that this guide's sister has married someone from this village.

The microfilms I ordered are finally here. They are CI9 certificates of immigrants born in China, living in Canada that want to travel back to China. They even have their picture. I am trying to find out who went back to China with my dad and his sister in 1916 when they were 3 and 4 yrs old. A quick search on the films (will take a while as there are thousands and thousands) has turned up a man that was "living in Vernon" from "Jong Dai Village" that travelled on the same boat. On his document his "English" name is SHUM YEW SUM. Don't know if he is related yet. He originally came over in 1903 on the same boat as my grandfather's brother and now have found 2 others on the same boat and all from Jong Dai. One was SHUM LEONG KET and the other was SHUM LOO CHEE. It says SHUM LOO CHEE was a male as they just used ditto marks, but I think it may be the "Loo Shee" There are other documents that have a "Mrs." listed as male. Anyway here are the characters off of SHUM YEW SUM's CI9 I am assuming it is "traditional' as it is from 1916. Just wondering if it says "Shum Yew Sum" or is it different.

My husband says it is the name you have there. I'll call your relative on Saturday - as I get home too late to call. Have yet to figure out what to say to her - If she can't speak English,. I need to have a back up conversation ready - lol. Hopefully she has been here long enough to know some English. I am thinking she must be in her late 50s early 60s by now? So maybe she might have kids who speak English. I don't just want to call her up out of the blue as she might clam up on me - a mere stranger.

Thanks Helen...I may try calling Thurs or Fri just to see if she speaks English. It would be so much easier for me if she did. Except I don't know how to pronounce her name...lol Ah Xiao

Well. Made the call to family in New Zealand. More fantastic revelations. They had many answers for me. Still many more that need to be answered. As it turns out I have an cousin in China GUO SHENG LIU--刘国胜 that speaks English quite well. He is my auntie's daughter's son. What a bonus for when I go over.
Also another huge one is I have a relative living here in Canada. He is 70+ yrs old and has been here since he was 15 He is the uncle of the lady (my auntie's daughter Ah Xiao 阿笑) that I called in New Zealand. He lives in Vernon where my dad, his sister and some of us were born and lived. He knew my dad. Will be going to Vernon to see and meet with him July 6,7.
It has been confirmed my grandfather had 3 brothers and they all came to Canada and left their families in China.
They gave me these as their names (unicode utf-8) to view 沈延昌 沈腾昌 沈达昌
The bottom name matches the one I already have 沈达昌 Great Uncle Sam Dart Chong—Shen Tat Chong
Can someone please tell me what the other 2 are. Would one of them possibly be 沈为昌 Shen Wei Chong--Great Uncle Yee
OMG I can't believe how much all this family search has turned up and continues to turn up. Apparently I have many more relatives (mostly cousins I think) in China and new Zealand.
The family in New Zealand were very happy to speak with me and to know they now have 4 more uncles, 2 more aunts and 7 more cousins
Thanks to someone if they can give me the names of my grandfather's brothers.

Hello Harc3,
Just been viewing your docs on photobucket. Where are the " Dad's sister, Dad at 3 & Dad at 17" , numbers 6-8, documents archived or were they in your family's possession since their return from Hong Kong? Great source of family history especially the photo.
I've been finding similar travel documents at National Archives of Australia for my gggfather & ggf etc issued from 1902. In Australia, the cert was surrendered on return to Aust. So most people don't know of the existance of these docs & rich source of family history. Our cert included the return date & name of ship as well. Great for knowing how long they were overseas especially in determining where children were born. Your cert has more details on it whereas I have to find the application as it contains some info not included on the cert.
Geoff
