Those documents were on microfilm I ordered from archives Canada. They are CI9 certificiates of Canadian born Chinese going over to China. They had to have them to leave the country and to return. I have just got back from the library looking at microfilm (also ordered from archives Canada) of the same certificates of Chinese born in China, living in Canada that are going back to China to enable them to return. I am trying to find which relatives were on the boat to China with my dad and his sister when they were 3 and 4 respectively. I think I have found them complete with their pics and their names in Chinese characters. Good luck Geoff!!!

Hello Harc3,
I found my certs by viewing the actual files at the National Archives in Sydney. The files are listed on the NAA database online, with a series of 10 individual files given 1 barcode. This greatly assisted in finding other family members as they were issued with a cert number nearby. I also spent many Saturdays going thru files that were still in archive boxes as the project of barcoding was still in progress. I've ordered/paid for certs from interstate & luckily they have been family members. In Australia, the certs were called 'Certificate of Domicile" or later "Certificate Exempting from Dictation Test". What were your certs called in Canada?
I've always left the archives with some new info.
