My cousin has just come back from Sun Tong - Kwangchow. I managed to get an address from at least 40 years ago - and she located the family - and they were totally surprised - as there was no prior advice. It's been over 60 years since she last saw a member of her N Z family. she went to Grandfather's 3 storey house - ate snake. She was there on August Moon day - a most auspicous day. Remember to ask the oldest relatives you have - all the questions you have. Otherwise it will be too late.

I have been trying to find out a bit more of where my mothers family come from. Her father was Wong Wah Gee from Cobar NSW Australia. Possibly arrived in Australia perhaps in the 1870 to 1880s.The only leads that I have are from my grandfathers will in which he leaves a bequeath to his ancestor (Nem Bat Tzu) of Sarto. He also left another bequest to be used to build a school in the village to be called Wong Wah Gee College. Wong Wah Gee died in 1931 in Australia. I can't find any reference anywhere to Nem Bat Tzu.( it has been said that he was the founder of Sarto about three or four centuries ago.) I think I have found the village. Sarto I think is now spelt Huangshatoucun. I think Sarto was a very angliscised version of the above.I think Huang is Wong and cun means village so possibly Huangshatoucun means Wong Shatou village. Can anyone tell if I am on the right track? Also does anyone know more or has heard of Nem Bat Tzu I would love to know more.

Huangshatoucun - is the Wong village in Xintang. (No 2 on map Sha Tau) Next to Gwa Leng. We have a few Wongs from that village in New Zealand - and I will be visiting the villages early October.

According to the accepted account, the grand patriarch of the lower Jung Seng Wongs, was one Wong Yi Po (1111-1186) His son was Wong Nim Baat born 1131, settled in 1142 is Shatou. In 1160 a descendant moved to settle in nearby Bak Shek. From Gwa Leng Wongs in New Zealand siyigenealogy.proboards.com/thread/1163/gwa-leng-wongs-new-zealand

Thanks Helen,I will be going to Guangdong in November to visit my paternal grandfathers village house which is in Zhuziyuan village in the Baiyun region. If time allows it would be good to be able to go to Huangshatoucun as well. Seems as if Shatou was established well before I had envisaged.

Hi gordon, back in Mar 2006 to Aug 2006, under the name of "Sydney, Guest" & later "geoff, member", in this thread, I was enquiring about my great grandfather's Wong village of Bak Shek in China. He arrived in Melbourne in 1856 (aged 18), not in the 1870's which I estimated back in 2006. His children were born in Melb & my maternal grandfather moved to Wellington, NSW in late 1890's to manage the Wong established general store called "Fong Lee & Co".
My mother told me a bit about the Wong general stores at Cobar & Stuart Town (near Wellington). I have since discovered another Wong general store at Narromine. All the stores have closed.
I'd like to share more info with you. Can we meet somewhere in Sydney?

Hi Geoff, I think I was in correspondence with you perhaps in 2011? At the time I was trying to find out more information regarding the Ling family of Wellington. My maternal grandfather was sponsored out to Australia along with his three brothers by Fong Lee's of Wellington. Wong Wah Gee moved to Cobar and opened the store there while the other two remained in Wellington at Fong Lees. They were Wong Wah Hum and Wong Wah Shu. Another brother moved to Stuartown and opened a shop "Yee Lee" This info is all in an oral history of Hoy Lee recorded by Janice Wilton in a website called Golden Threads.
Would love to be able to sit down and talk with you but I live in New Zealand.
Regards Gordon

Hi Helen, I did live in Wellington NZ, but some time ago. I have now lived in the Pukekohe and Auckland area for the last 45 years. The Wellington that I refer to in previous posts with reference to Wong Wah Gee etc is as you are probably aware the Wellington in NSW.
And no I don't belong to the Tung Jung Association,I wasn't aware of what they do and the information they can provide.

Auckland branch of Tung Jung Association is taking 23 people back to Jungseng /Zengcheng in October. Will be visiting all the villages that they belong - Wong Shatou, Gwa Leng, Sung Tong, Dai Dung, and a few other villages. Should be good - second/third generations - some who have never been back.
