Hi Kaoyien, Welcome to our Forum. I cannot confirm the Chinese character you have for your family surname. I only found it in one Chinese dictionary - it did not provide a meaning - just said it was pronunced as "qiao" and xiao". Could you post a scan of the passport? This link will tell you how to post an image on the Forum: siyigenealogy.proboards28.com/index.cgi?board=comment&action=display&thread=421By affiliation - are these the names of your grandfather's parents. Because your grandfather kept in contact with the family in Taishan - do you have the address of your ancestral village? The Chinese characters for the name of this ancestral village? Are there Chinese characters on your grandfather's gravestone - if so, a digital photo would be useful. If we can establish the Chinese names of your grandfather and his brother and the name of their village - then we can locate your ancestral village. A person can be sent to the village to identify village relatives and perhaps a copy of your family genealogy book can be found and copied. Regards, Henry

kaoyien's post is in Shift_JIS (japanese), pls use unicode (utf-8) next time. Nothing is wrong, just different dialect 朱=Gee(å°å±±) /Chu(Cantonese) /Zhu (pinyin) Zhu= "Gee, Chu" in c-c-c village dbUnless there's further information about the village name or nearest market town (heung / subheung) -Did you check the local chinese association ur grandpa joined / old pal's etc? = end of story Put an ad on the local cable TSTV isn't a bad idea (but 荻海 etc belong to 开平 nowadays) .

Kaoyien, Thanks for sharing the documents. It shows the Chinese characters for your grandfather's name. This is half the information needed. Do you have any additional documents that might show the name of your ancestral village where your grandfather was born? Such as old letters and their envelopes and old address books in Chinese? If the Chinese name of the village can be found - then somebody can go to the village and query the village chief to identify village relatives and try to find and copy your family genealogy book. If you check the Village DB: www.c-c-c.org/villagedb/about.html and do a search for surname under " Gee - Chu" - you'll see that there are 179 possible ancestral villages - so, you really do need to find the Chinese name of the village. Can somebody you know take a digital photo of your grandfather's gravestone in Rio de Janerio? Henry

Kaoyien, Perhaps laohuaqiao can post the Chinese characters for the names of your grandfather and his brother. Then, you can send me an email at Tomclan@Gmail.com and I can arrange for my Taishan nephew to contact the village chief, to identify possible relatives, and try to find and copy your family genealogy book. Reviews on my nephew: siyigenealogy.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=names&action=display&thread=821&page=1Here is a map that shows where Haiyan Town is relative to the other places in the region. I included the traditional Chinese characters for " Lunding village". The map is usuing a simplified Chinese character for Lun. The Village identifies this as "Lung Tin" (Cantonese romanization). Your ancestral village looks about 3 km from Haiyan town. Geographic trivia question - why do the people in Brazil speak Portuguese, when most everybody else speaks Spanish in South America? BTW, my wife is Colombian. Henry

Kaoyien,
You have come to the right forum as I also went to Haiyan to visit our ancestral village. I met Henry's nephew at the bus station in Taisan Taicheng and he took care of transport, search for the village, an excellent lunch in the village shop. I would recommend you liase with Henry to get the services of his nephew, it will save you a lot of needless running around. As a special favour he came with me to the village, his expertise in the local dialect was an invaluable aid, his English is acceptable but I fear his Portuguese is not as good!

The translation of the envelope: 巴西埠 Brazil 朱裘炎 Chu Kao Yim/Zhu Qiu Yan (Cantonese/Mandarin) 炳元 Bing Yun/Bing Yuan 二位先生收 two gentlemen to receive (Bing Yuan is the same name that's in the certificate)
台山 海晏 崙定 Taishan Haiyan Lunding, 朱新結 付 Zhu Xinjie sent
The sender is a man or woman, that's a good question. 朱新結 can be either a man or a woman. Looking at the name again, there is another more likely possible third character. The name could also be 朱新洁 (simplified Chinese) or 朱新潔 (traditional Chinese) pronounced the same Zhu Xinjie; this is almost surely a woman. Looking at the Chinese writing, I would say it was likely to be written by a woman.

Kaoyien, If you do visit your ancestral village in Taishan, be sure to stop by Macau where 10% of the population speaks Portuguese and the streets have both Chinese and Portuguese names.
